“Aha, yes, there is something inside
this. Smart kid. Take a guess what it is.”
“Um, is it wires and stuff?”
“Nope. Well, yes, but there's
something else. Something special.”
“Is it a smaller remote? Is it full
of little remotes?”
“No, but that would be funny.”
“Is it a computer?”
“Ooh, close.”
“Is it a robot?”
“Closer.”
“Is it... uhh...”
“Do you want me to tell you?”
“Yeah.”
“Inside there is a chamber, about so
big, and in that chamber something is growing. Incubating. It's not
ready to come out yet, but when it does, everything will change. It's
a new kind of life, made out of connections and streams and light and
pulses.”
“Is this a metaphor for...?”
“No! This is real! A being of the
future, now!”
“So, it is a robot?”
“Look, it... All right, it's sort of
a robot. Or a computer. But it's self-assembling. Growing. Listen.
Did you hear that? Every time I shake it, it sounds different.
Something is in there. I haven't actually seen it. Never opened it.
Kind of scared to. Oh, excuse me, it's time to feed it and put it to
bed.”
